HIS 150 Movie Paper Guidelines

Purpose: Your final paper should be an argument as to the accuracy of your chosen movie. Your paper should use evidence from academic sources to argue for the accuracy of the film. Your introduction should state clearly how accurate a portrayal you believe the movie was about the given themes it covered. If you are analyzing a section or one particular theme, you need to make that clear in your introduction. The body of your paper should be paragraphs detailing scenes/characters/themes and how your sources enlighten you about the film’s accuracy. You can talk about how the event was portrayed in the film and how your sources suggest it really happened. Your final paragraph should be your conclusion – it should reinforce your introduction about the accuracy of the film and include a discussion on how the film’s accuracy/lack of impacts your understanding of the film and the events it portrays. If it is not remotely accurate, does that make the film worthless? If so, why? If it seems incredibly accurate, how does that help the general public understand these historic events better?

Format:

  • Name in the top left corner
  • Title
  • Double-spaced
  • 12 point font
  • 1 or 1.25 inch margins
  • 3-4 pages
    • You need at least 3 full pages to meet this requirement
  • You need paragraphs and every body paragraph needs a citation
    • Where does your evidence come from?

Recommendations for organizing your paper:

  • Have a strong introduction
    • State what your argument is – is your film accurate or inaccurate?
  • Have one or two paragraphs summarizing the film
    • Give major plot/characters that are vital to your analysis
  • Each subsequent paragraph should be your evidence
    • I suggest you pick 3-5 things to analyze about the film
      • Start with what happens in the film and then use your sources to provide evidence as to how accurate the scene/character/event is
      • Finish each paragraph with some kind of sentence as to how this relates to your argument
        • (Think of this like banging me on the head with your argument so that I couldn’t possibly forget it)
  • Have a strong conclusion
    • Remind me what your argument and highlight the evidence you used to prove it
    • Do not add any new information to your conclusion
